Eisley Barrett is a single mom from small town Virginia. The only guys in her life are eight-year-old Nathan and six-year-old Pete. She has her hands full with them and their little sister Emily, not to mention a huge and somewhat wacky family. When she goes to England before Christmas for some research and relaxation, the last thing she's expecting is to practically maul a distinguished English gentleman in the airport. Well actually, that could probably be explained. What Eisley struggles with is the identity of the older man's hunky son. He's none other than Wesley Harrison, star of Eisley's favorite Regency films, including new blockbuster A Ransomed Gentleman. There's no way someone like him would want a simple single mom from the country, is there?Actually yes there is, and Pepper Basham does a wonderful job of crafting one of the sweetest romances I've read in a while. Both Wes and Eisley are healing from painful pasts; he's a reformed rake and she's barely over the betrayals of her ex, a serial adulterer. Both want to trust God and throw themselves into His grace and incredible plans for them, but the reality of life often gets in the way. People and circumstances continually try to tear these two apart, but they hang onto each other with cheer-worthy tenacity, through tough circumstances and across oceans. Pepper's use of the Song of Solomon quote about love that many waters cannot quench fits perfectly into this story.
The individual scenes and subplots Pepper crafts took my breath away. England comes alive, from the fancy Christmas gala to Wes' family home, Rose Hill Cottage. I love the interactions between Eisley, Wes, and later, Wes and the kids. I got a real kick out of the tower scene, and enjoyed Eisley's journey toward becoming a true author. I wanted to see more of it, and maybe a little more of Julia Ramsden's story. If Pepper truly wanted to go epic, she could've made this story a historical/contemporary novel, although what exists is great on its own.
In general, I wanted and needed to see "more" of a few things. For instance, Eisley drops bits of her siblings' stories, but doesn't go into detail. I love where this is going--I want to see Pepper develop a whole series based on the Jenkins family. But the problem is, the way Eisley talks about these stories at times, it feels like the reader should already know all the details. That could've been done better. As noted, I wanted to see more of Eisley's research project, and maybe some more character development for Vivian. She's a good villain, but a bit flat--right at the end, she seemed borderline psychotic. Kind of a letdown--I've seen the crazy ex before. I would've also liked to see less of Eisley and Wes' conflict revolving around whether Eisley would or would not leak information to the tabloids. Seen it, and besides, she proved over and over that she wouldn't. At one point I wanted to ask Wes, "Dude, when are you gonna get it?"
The Kindle edition, at least, had some editing problems. There were a few misspellings or varied ones (Lizzie, Lizze, Lizzy, McElroy, MacLeroy, etc.) There were also some name changes; a minor character is called Mack Richardson, then Mack Larson. This was annoying at times, but forgivable in light of the good stuff. My only advice to Pepper is, please write more.

Just the Way You Are, book one in the Pleasant Gap Romance series is a delightful and swoon worthy romance story that readers will thoroughly enjoy. This is a charming and funny story about an unlikely pair, a single mom, Eisley, from the Appalachian Mountains and British movie star, Wes Harris. It is about how a friendship and a second chance at love takes place. It discusses having trust issues in romantic relationships, as well as how people make mistakes. This story is beautifully written and has lots of memorable lines, such as “Gracious sakes! I squished a grandpa.” Readers will immediately fall in love with the characters and the story, not wanting to put the book down until the last page is turned.

Basham dazzles with pitch-perfect comedic spark and oodles of charm! Pairing a suave celebrity hunk with an adorably insecure and quirky single mom is an unlikely match, to say the least. Add in cultural gap as wide as the Atlantic, match-making grandparents, a hint of mystery, a passel of adorable kidlets, chemistry that will steam up your reading glasses, and wounds deeper than Wes's delicious English accent, and you've got a couple you can feel so palpably, they practically leap off the page and burrow beneath your skin. Relatable and genuine, Eisley is refreshingly real and entirely endearing. And the oh-so-dreamy Wes is just the man to awaken dreams crushed by another man's cruelty. Each are fighting their own battles, desperate to find a flicker of hope buried under their mistakes. In a tale loaded with laughs and overflowing with heart, Wes and Eisley dance and fumble their way to a happily ever after neither could have planned or dreamed. In perhaps Basham's crowning jewel of her already glittering writing career, she reminds the romantic in all of us that true love doesn't demand perfection. It finds us worthy just the way we are.
